Behind the Bones

BEHIND THE BONES

A Slightly Hostile Note About the Author

Maybe you’re wondering why so many skeletons have taken up residence here. I just like their company. It’s a reminder there’s always something waiting on the other side, a quiet link to what comes next. Besides, they don’t ask dumb questions and they’re less committed to being insufferable.

If we ever happen to share this half-collapsed timeline, I may not strike you as someone who lets death in when he knocks. Then again, he never came alone. Loss followed close behind and made itself comfortable. The drawings wandered in decades later.

I didn’t start drawing to heal. Healing implies you’re going back to who you were. Do you know what’s better than recovery? Evolution. It hands you sharper teeth and simply waits to see who you’ll bite first.

In the meantime, creating keeps the silence from getting too full of itself. It’s my way of staring the emptiness down until it blinks first. And if nothing else, it leaves behind something that won’t judge you. Especially a coloring book that’s almost empty inside, literally.

So thanks for stepping into my drafty little crypt. Mind the bones on your way out. They tend to rearrange themselves when they’re bored.
